Job Duties and Responsibilities:

This job contributes to Substance success by assisting the store manager in executing store operations. This job assists and supervises a team of store employees to create and maintain the Substance experience for our customers and employees. The professional is responsible for modeling and acting in accordance with Substance guiding principles.


Summary of Key Responsibilities 

Responsibilities and essential job functions include but are not limited to the following:


  • Review the store's environment and key business indicators to identify problems, concerns and opportunities for improvement in order to provide coaching and direction to the shift team to achieve operational goals.

  • Communicate ideas to the store manager for broader areas of improvement.

  • Support store managers in implementing company programs by working directly with the shift team to execute action plans that meet operational and organization objectives.

  • Maintain and model a calm demeanor during periods of high volume or unusual events. Continue to keep the store operating to standard and sets a positive example for the shift team. 

  • Develop positive relationships with the shift team by understanding and addressing individual motivation, needs and concerns.

  • Act as a coach and mentor to employees by using discretion in assessing performance, providing feedback and coaching to improve partner performance, and effectively recommend employment decisions to store managers.

  • Support store operations by recognizing and reinforcing individual and team accomplishments through existing organizational tools and make recommendations to store managers on new, creative, and impactful methods of recognition.

  • Model a customer comes first attitude, deliver exemplary customer service, and supervise employees to ensure they are doing the same.

  • Engage in conversation with customers to understand customer needs and the needs of the community in which the store is located.

  • Utilize all possible tools (software, hardware, checklists, messaging, brooms & mops) to achieve operational excellence, and provide direction to employees to do the same.

  • Communicate clearly, concisely and accurately in order to ensure effective store operations. Filter communication to the shift team as directed by the store manager.

  • Contribute to a positive team environment by recognizing alarms or changes in partner morale and performance, and communicate them to the store manager.

  • Demonstrate integrity, honesty, and knowledge that promote the culture, values and mission of Substance. 

  • Respond to immediate store needs by utilizing external resources such as Human Resources, Marketing, Inventory,and Accounting.

  • Assist the team in developing business acumen and understanding how their actions impact the financial stability of their shop and contribute to organizational goals.

Qualifications

  • Progressively responsible retail experience -  2 years. Customer service experience in a customer facing, retail, restaurant or service environment - 1 year. Extensive retail knowledge.

  • Maintain regular and consistent attendance and punctuality, with or without reasonable accommodation.

  • Available to work flexible hours that may include early mornings, evenings, weekends, nights and/or holidays.

  • Experience and discretion in directing the work of others. Effective oral communication skills. 

  • Ability to act with a customer comes first attitude and deliver customer service that meets or exceeds expectations. 

  • Strong interpersonal, problem-solving, and team-building skills.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced and changing environment.


Special Demands

  • Ability to stand, walk, sit, and kneel daily in retail and production environments that include concrete or other hard-surface floors and, in some instances, staircases.

  • Ability to push, pull and carry up to 50 pounds multiple times daily.

  • Ability to maintain focus and memory in environments with distractions such as heavy foot traffic, background noise due to public conversations and the gathering of people, etc.

  • Ability to sit at a desk and work at a computer for several contiguous hours.

  • Ability to drive a motor vehicle for several hours contiguously.
